A dental emergency is any problem that needs prompt attention to relieve pain, stop bleeding, treat infection or help prevent further damage to your teeth or gums. This includes severe toothache, swelling, a knocked-out or badly broken tooth, dental trauma, or a lost filling or crown that’s causing pain.
Not sure whether you need emergency dental care in Werribee? Give us a call. Tell us what’s happened and we’ll help you work out how quickly you need to be seen.
Not every toothache needs immediate treatment, but severe, persistent or worsening pain shouldn’t be ignored. Toothache can have many causes. Decay. A cracked tooth. Infection.
If you’re in significant pain, it’s best to seek urgent dental care. Where possible, we’ll arrange a same day emergency dentist appointment to find the cause and help get you comfortable, and smiling, again.
If your tooth has been completely knocked out, immediate dental care is needed. Pick up the tooth by the crown rather than the root and, if it’s dirty, gently rinse it with milk or saline. Try to place it back into the socket if you can, or keep it moist in milk while you make your way to the dentist. Acting quickly can improve the chance of saving the tooth.
If you’ve lost your tooth because of severe injury to the head or face, please go straight to your nearest emergency department. Werribee Mercy Hospital, located at 300 Princes Highway, has a 24-hour emergency department.
For a broken or chipped tooth, contact us as soon as you can. Even if it doesn’t hurt, it’s worth having the damage checked.
A small amount of bleeding when brushing or flossing can be a sign of gum inflammation and is worth discussing with your dentist. Heavy bleeding that doesn’t stop, particularly after an injury or dental procedure, may need more urgent dental attention.
Apply gentle pressure with clean gauze and call us for advice. If the bleeding is severe or you’re otherwise unwell, seek urgent medical attention.
This depends on your private health fund, level of dental cover and the treatment you need. If you have private health insurance with dental extras, you may be able to claim towards some of the cost of your emergency treatment.
We’ll always explain any recommended treatment and the costs before going ahead. We also offer flexible payment options through Afterpay and Zip Pay.
Yes, root canal treatment may be recommended when severe tooth pain or infection involves the pulp inside the tooth. The priority at an emergency dental clinic appointment is to assess what’s causing your symptoms and get you out of pain.
Depending on what we find, treatment may begin at your emergency appointment or we may arrange a follow-up visit to complete your care.
Keep the crown somewhere safe and call us to arrange an appointment. Avoid chewing on that side of your mouth in the meantime, as the tooth underneath may be sensitive or vulnerable to further damage.
Don’t try to glue the crown back on yourself. We’ll check the tooth and crown and determine whether it can be reattached or another treatment is needed.
